大唐中宗景龙年间，两大名捕裴逸飞（吴镇宇）、淳于子鸿（戴志伟）及神医宋轩（甘国卫）本乃好友，三人同时爱上酒馆女主人麦菊儿（梁佩玲），而菊儿独钟情于逸飞，宋轩知难而退，与寡妇慕兰（张凤妮）展开另一段恋情。但子鸿却不忿，加上事业有所不及，为击败逸飞，而误入魔道。女线人上官晶晶（林其欣）暗恋逸飞，惜襄王无梦，晶晶失意之余，机缘巧合之下与微服出游的李隆基（杨得时）结识。韦后（李丽丽）夺权，毒杀皇帝，把持朝政，子鸿助纣为虐，隆基则得晶晶、逸飞及胡姬（郑艳丽）相助，与韦后对抗，连场明争暗斗，隆基终败韦后，力保大唐江山。子鸿失去靠山，转而加入金魔王（叶天行）之幽灵帮，继续对付逸飞，并杀死宋轩，逸飞悲痛欲绝，加上其妹裴凌（姚正菁）亦间接死于子鸿之手，逸飞誓杀子鸿报仇。此时，逸飞却查出菊儿竟是幽灵帮一份子，其真正身份是……。Documentary profile of the Soviet film director Elem Klimov.
