本片以1951年至1954年人民解放军在塔里木开挖新疆第一条人工河“胜利渠”，引塔里木河水灌溉农田为时代背景，讲述了“塔河五姑娘”青春、奋斗的传奇故事。 某连新来了五个20多岁来自山东、湖南的女兵娃，坚决要求上工地挖渠。她们不仅经受住了超强劳动和艰苦生活的考验，战胜了各种困难，还在劳动中收获了爱情。最终赶超男兵，创造了日挖运土方72立方的奇迹，荣获“穆桂英小组”称号，坊间誉为“塔河五姑娘”。 该片生动地再现了那一代青年人守疆固边、垦植绿洲、奉献终身的崇高品质和博大胸怀。。吉村公三郎代表作，也是蘇珊．桑塔最喜愛的日本經典片之一。吉村愛向難度挑戰，喜歡實驗，討厭被歸類，是松竹的壞孩子，卻因此為日本電影開創出不少可能性。影片描寫日本戰後，末落貴族變賣大宅前舉行的最後一場舞會。吉村親歷這樣的一個舞會，他用所見所感，寫出一個個玲瓏浮凸的人物：戀棧風光的父親，目空一切的兒子，不肯放下身段的大女兒...道盡大時代的種種細碎。也是原節子代表作，這個洞悉世情的次女兒與父親起舞，成為全片焦點，也為時代作了精采的解讀。 World War II is over, and the once-prominent Anjo family has fallen on hard times.
